Our Objective:

Bill's Floor Sanding works to create smooth, natural-colored floors without any marking or pooling of the finish to create beautiful floors which are the foundation of a beautiful room. We will ensure that our sanding operation does not create any marks or indentations to your floors.

The Process:

  1. Average floor will take 3 sandings
  2. Starting with a coarse sanding
  3. Followed by a fine sanding
  4. Finished with a buffing of the entire floor  with a super fine grade carberundum screen
  5. As part of the process is the sanding and scraping of corners and near radiators with special equipment
  6. Nail holes are puttied
  7. The finish is applied next

The Finishes:

There are two types of urethane type finishes—Oil Based and Water Based—The Oil Finish has a golden, blond color as opposed to the lighter look of the Water Based. Oil Base finishes have a stronger odor when drying with a paint thinner smell. Water Based thinners take 2-3 hours to dry while Oil Base takes 4-8 hours to do so.

We use the Oil Finishes 75-80 % of the time and don't recommend the water based finishes for high traffic applications.

I recommend at least three coats of both the oil and water based finishes. We also do staining which is the adding a color to the floor. Stain charts are available.

Oil Based Finishes
Oil Modified Urethane is often called "Poly" and is the most common wood floor finish. This type of finish is very durable and adds a rich amber tone, bringing out the beauty in the wood.

Waterbased Finishes
Waterbased Finishes are durable, fast drying, clear in color, almost odorless, and most importantly environmentally friendly.

Stains and Penetrating Finishes
Staining hardwood floors is a very common practice. Oil-based stains can be used before virtually any type of finish, or buffed in and used as an oil finish.

Moisture Cure Urethanes
Moisture Cure Urethanes are a close cousin of oil-based urethanes. They are very durable, but very hard to apply. They are the opposite of most finishes, drying with the presence of moisture, rather than the absence of it.
