It seems impossible that it’s been over 50 years since I
started going around to flooring jobs with my dad and my
grandfather. Those trips were the beginning of what
would turn out to be a life's ambition.
I remember how proud I was after mastering each of the
many individual tasks involved in the sanding and finishing
of wood floors. I took great pride in the family
business and the attention to detail that my grandfather
insisted made the difference. Our customers thought so too,
as they often told us that we were "the best around".
We did all the sanding and finishing work at UMass,
Amherst, Smith and Mt Holyoke colleges. I learned my
trade from the old timers, from a time gone by.
Pride in our work was the greatest lesson of all -
turning out a quality product that you personally knew was
your best. I continue to instill this pride in workmanship
in my sons today. It was instilled in me by my father
- how important it was to pay attention to all the little
details that by themselves don't mean much but put together
make all the difference.
I continued the tradition by expanding to the greater
Hartford area in 1974 with the establishment of Bill's Floor
Sanding. Our work product became well known, and demand for
our services increased to include West Hartford, where our
quality of work and superior customer service gained further
respect.
Thirty two years later, we continue to serve West
Hartford and the Farmington Valley, often working on the
same house with new owners. And we continue to use the
time tested techniques which have brought our customers joy
for four generations.
